“Building Code Of The Day” Question: Your centerline measurement of a hallway in a home is 21 feet. How many receptacles are required? A) None
B) 1
C) 2
D) 3
Answer: B) 1 2017 NEC- 210.52(H) Hallways
In dwelling units, hallways of 3.0 m (10 ft) or more in length shall have at least one receptacle outlet.
As used in this subsection, the hallway length shall be considered the length along the centerline of the hallway without passing through a doorway.
Comment-
Hallways are not subject to the general receptacle-placement provisions in 210.52(A), the 6 & 12 rule. So the installation of receptacles so that there is no point is more than six feet from a receptacle is not required in hallways. In residential/dwelling units, hallways measuring 10 feet or more in length must have at least one receptacle outlet. A receptacle is not required if the hallway’s length is less than 10 feet. Since hallway receptacles are typically not blocked by furniture and belongings, they can be convenient for night lights, vacuum cleaners, etc.
The required receptacle can be installed on either side of the hall, but not more than five-and-a-half feet above the floor.
For a hallway we use the centerline of the hallway for measurement. This method for measuring of the hallway’s length used without passing through a doorway even if the hallway is straight or not.
This requirement does not require a receptacle is required for every 10 feet of hall. Regardless of the hallway’s length past 10 feet only one receptacle is required.
