Moisture ant Carton. These galleries of the moisture ant nest are made from decayed
wood glued together with their saliva.
“Moisture ant” is a collective name that includes a number of ant species in two major genera which are superficially similar in appearance and size.
Both are wood invaders. These are the yellow ants (Acanthomyops spp.), which are not found in Washington, and the cornfield ants (Lasius spp).
Cornfield Ants (Lasius spp.) are a species that are typically yellow though they can vary to a rather dark brown Their size is typically around 3–5 mm long. Moisture ants are monomorphic species having workers all the same size.
These ants are environmental indicator of a moisture problem in the home. To eliminate them only requires changing the environment (eliminating moisture).
Chemical control is rarely advised unless they are nesting near or under the house and begin to be a nuisance. If this is the case, then chemical control may become necessary.
