Swarmers or Alates are reproductives termites that are venturing out to start a new colony.
The termite reproductives are the winged termites and typically black or brown in color. Soldiers, workers and immatures are much smaller, wingless and white or cream colored. The subterranean termites here in Chelan and Douglas county area typically swarm in the spring time.
We can thank our friend Mrs Spider for creating this lovely collection. Termites are social insects, living together in large colonies, and caring for their queen and her young. The colony nests of Western subterranean termites are typically located in the ground below the frost line, but above the water table.
Western subterranean termites in their search for new food sources may have a 300 yard radius. They can enter structures through very small cracks in concrete flooring such as in this case, or travel under and behind, tile flooring, as well as other materials. They can get through gaps as small (or even slightly smaller) as 1/16 inch wide.
