I want to push your button- Wenatchee and Chelan Home Inspection Services
Smoke alarms are one of the simplest and most easily overlooked items in a home. All too often I find during a home inspection that the smoke alarms are very old, disconnected or the battery is removed. 65 percent of home fire deaths happen in homes that either have no smoke alarm or the smoke alarm has been disabled.
You should test your smoke alarm every month by pushing the button. Make a game of it and have your children remind you to do it, the “I want to push your button” game. Here is a sheet you can hang up in your home that the kids can use to remind you. Make it fun and your life may one day depend on it. Smoke alarm test “Tear Calendar”- (download)
If your home is built after 1989 you most likely will have interconnected smoke alarms. When you test these it should trigger the other alarms to chirp. In older homes that do not have interconnected smoke alarms you will have to do them individually.
Smoke alarm should not stay in service for more than 10 years. When you go to replace them you should now consider the wireless interconnected smoke alarms (Wireless interconnected smoke Alarm).
These alarms are not that expensive. You should also install consider installing both photoelectric and Ionization alarms (Smoke Alarms).
Here is a video from the NFPA on smoke alarms.
Remember you should have a smoke alarm in every bedroom and outside of every sleeping area. You also need one on every level of the home. (Smoke alarms-Why, When and Where from the CPSC)
