I was called by an elderly couple a few months back just prior to winter, to perform a crawlspace maintenance inspection and here is a rather sad story.
The husband had suffered from a bout of cancer and due to this was unable to do some of the things he would normally do. One such thing was an annual inspection of his crawlspace.
His wife did not want him crawling down there anymore because he was too weak to do such tasks. She told me “I do not want him to get hurt”. She had such a loving and warm heart.
I find it very rare that anyone does this on any frequent basis. But he was very good at maintaining his home and would do such tasks before having cancer. So they hired me to go through the crawlspace and report anything that needed to be corrected.
Prior to my inspection they had an issue in the bathroom. They had a plumbing contractor show up and do the repairs. They said they were very happy with the work that he had performed and thought he did a nice job in the bathroom.
I start my inspection and notice a few things that will need to be corrected and then I get to the area where the plumbing repairs had been performed. I found that the plumbing contractor had never finished the job in the crawlspace.
Here is a pile of insulation that had never been put back in place. No insulation leads to cold feet.
Here is a pile of debris that never got cleaned up.
And worst of all here is the pipes that never got re-insulated.
Luckily this was found prior to winter because this could of turning into a much worse problem. If this had not been discovered and corrected the pipes could have froze.
They were a sweet couple and it really bothered me that someone would do this to them. They paid this contractor to perform a job and were let down, a broken promise.
