Wye Is this a problem?- A Wenatchee and Chelan Home Inspection Service
Is your home inspector willing to go the extra mile, or in the case the extra feet.
During a recent home inspection I found a curious situation. I was in a mechanical closet that was situated under some stairs. I could see some plumbing lines behind the water heater but getting back there was going to be a bit of a chore. So off comes the tool belt I move a few items and then suck in the old gut and squeeze through.
Here is what was found. Wye is this a issue you say? Well this is a sanitary tee has been installed upside down. Which can lead to venting and clogging issues.
We do not need to mention the glue do we?
So having that home inspector that is willing to go that extra mile( or feet) will could save you from some plumbing issues in the future.
For the a little plumbing geek-a-tude:
A sanitary tees are tees with a curved center section designed to minimize the siphoning action that could draw water out of a trap.
Wye fittings are fittings with three openings. Wyes are used to create branch lines. It is a type of waste fitting tee which has the side inlet pipe entering at a 45° angle, or an angle other than 90 degrees. A normal wye is a "Y" shaped fitting that allows one pipe to be joined to another at a 45 degree angle.
Wyes are like tees except that the branch line is angled to reduce friction and/or turbulence that could hamper the flow. If a branch turns out further at the end to be perpendicular to the through line, the fitting becomes a "tee-wye" (TY).
