East Wenatchee, Waterville and Okanogan Home Inspection-New Laws for Rat-Be-Gone
The EPA through the FIFRA (Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act) has made a decision that will effect what products, and how it‘s configured, can be used by the consumer and PCO's (Pest control operators)
The objective of the EPA Risk Mitigation Decision is two-fold: Decrease children's accidental exposure to rodent-control products. Reduce the risk of accidental poisonings of pets and wildlife.
The EPA made a ruling that certain types of active ingredients (anticoagulants) found in some rodenticides have a greater opportunity for misuse and accidental exposure to non-target wildlife and pets. The scientific data (mostly related to brodifacoum) suggested second-generation concentrations were evident in the tissue of unattended wildlife. Based on this conclusion, the EPA has taken steps to limit access to rodenticides based on who is applying the product and the active ingredient involved.
The EPA breaks down the users into the following groups: Professional Applicators, Agricultural Applicators and Home Users.
As of June 4, 2011, manufacturers will no longer be allowed to ship non-compliant products.
Distributors will be allowed to sell through any pre-mitigation products until their inventories are depleted and PCO's will be allowed to use until gone, any pre-mitigation products beyond the June 2011 date without restrictions.
Consumer Bait Stations will be changed as well to the following: (Requirements for all "residential consumer" products)
Tier I - Tamper-Resistance and Weather-Resistant- Resistant to weather and to tampering by children and dogs. To be used indoors and outdoors (within 50 feet of buildings).
Tier II - Tamper-Resistant (but not weather resistant)- Resistant to tampering by children and dogs. To be used indoors only.
Tier III - Tamper-Resistant for Children Only- Resistant to tampering by children. To be used indoors only.
Tier IV - Tamper-Resistance Unknown- These bait stations may not claim to be tamper resistant. Indoors use only and only in areas inaccessible to children and pets.
