Drum traps have been replaced with the more advanced p-traps which most homeowners will see in today's plumbing systems. The drum trap may have its own advantage on the ease of cleaning it out. But the issue is its design made the need of cleaning more frequent. It may not need replacement if it is functioning fine, but usually these are on older systems in need of update and repair so replacement is likely.

As a Okanogan County Home and Pest inspection I would beat this drum very slowly, because the aftermath may just stink!
