Do years as a Home inspector make the difference? Chelan Home Inspection Services
We all assume if you work at a profession for a number of years, then you should be very proficient at that profession. Many a home inspector will promote the claim that he/she has been inspecting for X number of years and performed thousands of inspections. The implication is that that individual has been proficient enough professionally to survive for so long and maintain such a volume of business.
But there may be more to the story. Some contractors who have been conducting home inspections for years do not really perform the job to the depth that one would expect from such a seasoned veteran. Looking at the issue from the perspective of a musician……….a naturally gifted musician will always have some ability, but the truly great ones achieve that status through dedication, practice and study.
The same is true of home inspectors, or any professional for that matter; to become truly proficient requires dedication, practice, and study. In my evolution from twenty-plus years of work in the biotech industry to home inspection professional, I can honestly say I study more now than ever. On an almost daily basis I am asking new questions, seeking new information sources, and encountering problems that require novel solutions. The true professional should constantly challenge what he/she knows and update that knowledge as new information becomes available.
Along these same lines, each of us develops habits that can either help or hinder our progress. An old music teacher once said to me, “Practice doesn’t make perfect; rather, perfect practice makes perfect”. Said differently, if you maintain bad practice habits, all you get is bad practice. Learning solid practice habits is a lifelong endeavor.
Finally, I never assume that I have performed a perfect home inspection. I do not believe such a thing exists. But to be a professional means that on your worst day you still perform at a high level of proficiency precisely because you have dedicated the necessary time, study and practice to constantly raise the bar.
“My entire life is dedicated to music, and at my age, that makes a lot of years! But all the work and dedication is only that I'm able to forget myself and let the music do the 'talking.’ ”
